Room for the Reporters

For a lot of young people, the most interesting part of a newspaper would have to be the entertainment section. In Canada, the section is fairly reasonable. A few things about some of the big celebrities, some movie reviews and articles about cool shows that are in town. It's a pretty all-round entertainment section.

However, on the other side of the globe, in Hong Kong, the entertainment section has an entirely different meaning. Entertainment means pages and pages and pages about celebrities' personal lives and very little about their work. Broken relationships, possible homosexuals and possible plastic surgery are always the topics of interest. Nobody cares anymore about good movies and good music.

As much as many of us love to know about relationships between the stars, they're only human. We're always complaining about invasion of privacy. So why are we so eager to know about their private matters? It's none of your business! So what if this singer might be gay? Does this make them a bad singer or something? Especially when you don't even know the real truth. Get a life!

Artists are making life magical for us, yet the public is constantly making life hell for them. Being a big fan of certain HK stars, I have a certain degree of respect for some of them. At times, it hurts to see to see that good music and movies are never recognized.

Wake up! Celebrities are human. They eat, sleep and play just like me and you. If you can do something, then they can do it too. If we continue like this, the entertainment industry is going to crash! Let's focus on the real entertainment and art!
